Commercial Sexual Exploitation (CSE)

Merriam-Webster defines human trafficking as an organized criminal activity where people are treated as possessions for control and exploitation, such as forced prostitution or labor.  Human trafficking is also defined as the involvement and recruitment, transportation, or harboring of individuals using force, fraud, or coercion for exploitative purposes like forced labor or commercial sex.

Key elements include the Process/Purpose, Means, and End. 

  • Process:  (recruiting, harboring, etc.),
  • Means:  (force, fraud, coercion)
  • End: *Commercial Sexual Exploitation (CSE) or involuntary labor/services (like slavery, debt bondage.

*Commercial Sexual Exploitation (CSE) is the human trafficking term for activities where a person is sexually abused or used for the financial or personal benefit of an exploiter. This often involves the exchange of sexual acts for money, goods, or the basic necessities such as food and shelter.
Forms of Exploitation
CSE encompasses several overlapping crimes and activities, including but not limited to:

Prostitution: The exchange of sexual services for money or goods. (The exchange of any type of sex act, (anticipated or completed) for any type of compensation.
Human Trafficking: The recruitment or harboring of persons for exploitation and/or financial gain, through force, fraud, or coercion.
Pornography: The commercial production and distribution of sexually explicit materials.
Live Streaming Abuse: Online transmission of sexual acts in exchange for any type of compensation.
Sexual Entertainment: Stripping, lap dancing, pole dancing, erotic massage, etc.
Survival Sex: Engaging in sexual acts specifically to obtain basic needs, which include by not limited to: shelter, drugs, and/or protection.
