I AM AXON FIRE
By: Amy Andrews

“They keep trying to name me — like a file folder, like a diagnosis, like a warning label slapped crooked on a wild thing.

Too loud. Too damaged. Too much history. Too sharp-tongued. Too old to still want fire in my hips.

They’d prefer me quieter. Folded. Grateful. Soft — like a brochure version of survival.

But I was forged in rivers that tried to swallow me whole.
I learned to breathe while drowning.
I bared teeth while bleeding.
I learned how to stand inside collapse and still keep my spine singing.

Do not hand me a tissue for this life.
These tears are not an apology. They are holy water wrung from endurance. They are proof that love still leaks through the cracks in my armor.

Sometimes I cry because beauty survives me. Sometimes because memory still has fingerprints. Sometimes because my nervous system remembers wars
my mouth never learned to pronounce.

But do not — do not — rush to clean me up. My mess is mine. My grief is mine. My joy is mine. My body still hums like a low-lit bar at closing time – warm, dangerous, breathing want into the dark.

Yes — I still want. I still taste the night. I still arch toward pleasure like dare to gravity. I still wear my skin like a velvet rebellion.

They want me neat.

I want me real.

I come from broken arrows in manicured lawns.

From women nobody budgets for.

From survivors who curse too loud and love too hard.

From sacred mouths that refuse to bless polite lies.

I have watched institutions feast
on vulnerability
like charity theater.

I have seen saints
with blood on their spreadsheets.

I have seen saviors
who wouldn’t last ten minutes
inside our lived skin.

So I choose my own compass now: Resilience.
Honesty.
Desire.
Unedited truth.

Gas-station coffee with strangers over champagne with cowards.

Label me if you must — but understand your words will not hold me.

I am not your symptom. I am not your project. I am not your cautionary tale. I am not your inspirational poster child.

I am a woman who outlived every attempt to erase her.

I am a nervous system
that still writes lightning.

I am a body that remembers how to open.

I am a mouth that refuses silence.

I am a flame that learned how to dance inside the storm.

I am axon fire –

electric synapse, lightning-struck, voltage in my veins, a network of sparks
that refuses to sleep.

I burn from dendrite to fingertip, from pelvis to pulse, from memory to desire.

I am kinetic, I am alive, I am charged with my own becoming.

And I carry them with me — my grandchildren, my stars, my heartbeats.

I fight in their name.
I rage, I protect, I love
so fiercely it scorches,
so tenderly it holds
all the corners of their little worlds that need my fire, my touch, my voice.

They are the reason my flame still rises, and the reason I cannot be tamed.

And if my tears make you uncomfortable  – good. Let them.
They are not here to make you clean.

They are here to prove I am still gloriously, dangerously alive.”
